Recordare belongs to Requiem, an ongoing series exploring the quiet tensions that shape existence. Two Dobermans and a hare remain suspended in a moment of uncertainty, where instinct, pursuit, and survival coexist without revealing their outcome.

Borrowed from the Latin for "remember," the title reflects on the traces left by every encounter. Whether defined by conflict, escape, resilience, or change, each experience continues to exist through memory long after the moment itself has passed. Rather than illustrating a conclusion, Recordare invites viewers to reflect on what remains when the action is over.

Original work by Papayon — Latin American contemporary artist based in Houston, TX. Oil on canvas board, 24x36in. 39x41x1.5in framed. Certificate of authenticity included.

About This Work

Studio Record

Recordare emerged after questioning whether repetition weakens a series or reveals its evolution. While its composition echoes an earlier work, the process shifted the focus from conflict to memory. The painting became less about the outcome of the chase and more about what remains after every encounter. Rather than replacing its predecessor, it accepts its role as a recurring motif viewed through a different emotional lens.

Encounters

While developing the Requiem series, I realized that memory does not belong only to loss. Every confrontation, whether resolved or not, leaves a trace. That realization transformed the title from a reference to remembrance into a reflection on how past encounters continue to shape the present, long after they have ended.

Artist's Note

Recordare (Latin for "remember") does not ask the viewer to recall a specific event, but to reflect on the persistence of experience itself. Within Requiem, the work suggests that every encounter—whether marked by conflict, escape, or survival—continues to exist through memory. The painting offers no conclusion, only the enduring presence of what has already been lived.
