Icons Never Die (2025)
Icons Never Die was a solo exhibition by Papayon presented at The Kennedy in Houston, Texas, opening on October 23, 2025.
The exhibition explored the persistence of cultural archetypes and the ways symbolic figures continue to survive beyond the historical moments that produced them. Cowboys, soldiers, saints, rebels, and dreamers appeared throughout the body of work—not as nostalgic references, but as evolving symbols shaped by memory, mythology, and collective imagination.
Rather than depicting collapse as an ending, the exhibition examined transformation. Figures suspended between glory and decay became metaphors for endurance, revealing how identities are continually rewritten while retaining traces of their original meaning.
Through layered surfaces, expressive mark-making, and a visual language that moved between reverence and irreverence, Papayon investigated the tension between personal mythology and shared cultural narratives. The works invited viewers to consider what remains after institutions, beliefs, and certainties begin to erode—and why certain images continue to endure.
Icons Never Die marked a further development in the artist’s ongoing exploration of resilience, memory, and symbolic inheritance.
