A general holds his revolver aloft as his black horse rears beneath him. An eagle passes overhead. Against the exposed gray linen, these familiar signs of authority occupy a scene with no visible enemy, audience, or destination.

The General draws on the language of military portraiture while leaving its certainty unsettled. The rider’s composed posture meets the horse’s restless movement, suspending the image between command and instability. Whether the gesture announces victory, issues a warning, or simply preserves an appearance of control remains open.
