Verbiage — Papayon | Mixed media 2024
A classical figure becomes the starting point for a conversation about memory, authority, and reinvention. Layers of graffiti, printed matter, fluorescent interventions, and gestural marks disrupt the familiar image, transforming an inherited symbol into something unstable and contemporary.
Rather than preserving the past, the work questions how cultural icons survive through constant reinterpretation. Acts of concealment and revelation coexist across the surface, where beauty and defacement become part of the same process.
In this work, Papayon explores the idea that history is never fixed. Meaning is continuously negotiated, rewritten, and reclaimed, leaving the viewer to decide whether they are witnessing the fall of an icon or the creation of a new one.
