Let Them Eat War borrows the language of royal portraiture and gives it a contemporary weapon.

Ribbons, powdered hair, and aristocratic poise remain intact, but the expected symbols of privilege are replaced by heavy artillery. The gesture is calm, almost casual, as though power has forgotten the difference between ceremony and conflict.

The work explores the distance between appearance and consequence. Authority performs itself through beauty, tradition, and spectacle, while the machinery of force waits just beneath the surface. The title suggests that indifference can become its own form of violence.

Rather than depicting a particular figure, Let Them Eat War considers the enduring relationship between status and accountability, asking what happens when comfort grows detached from the cost of its own decisions.

Original work by Papayon — Latin American contemporary artist based in Houston, TX. Oil Mixed media on cotton paper, 30x20in. Certificate of authenticity included. Ships worldwide.

About This Work

Studio Record

Created for La Persistencia del Necio at MUSAS and later incorporated into the permanent art collection of Mexico's SAT.

Encounters

Developed as part of an ongoing exploration of authority, public image, and the symbols societies choose to preserve.

Artist's Note

I wasn't interested in painting a villain. I was interested in the moment when privilege becomes so familiar that it mistakes itself for innocence.
