A rider leans into the movement of his dark horse, held against a luminous field of gold leaf. The horse resists, turns, or gathers itself for another movement; the rider’s posture offers no certain answer.

In The Attempt, Papayon holds the encounter between balance and instability. The gold ground lends the scene the permanence of an icon, while the figures remain caught in something unfinished. The title leaves success and failure outside the frame. What matters, for this moment, is the attempt itself.

About This Work

Artist's Note

The Attempt is part of the Falling series, a body of work centered on resilience and the moments in which control begins to give way.

This painting entered its collection unexpectedly. Its collector had returned to The Kennedy to pick up The Evening when she encountered The Attempt in person and decided to add it to the collection as well.

I find that especially fitting for the Falling series. The works are not only about the fall itself, but about what happens around it — the reaction, the adjustment, and the decision to keep moving.

The Attempt holds that moment without resolving it. Whether the attempt succeeds is less important than the fact that it is made.
