Rules of Engagement II.1: The Escalation captures the moment when restraint begins to fail.

Two mounted figures face one another in near perfect symmetry. The gestures are familiar, almost ceremonial, but the language of the encounter has changed. Sidearms have given way to automatic weapons, and negotiation has quietly become a display of consequence.

Part of the ongoing Rules of Engagement series, the work explores the fragile systems that govern conflict and cooperation. Every exchange depends on an agreement—spoken or otherwise—and escalation begins the moment that agreement is no longer shared.

The saturated red field removes any sense of place or distance, leaving only the confrontation itself. The riders become reflections of one another, locked in a ritual where neither side can easily retreat.

Original work by Papayon — Latin American contemporary artist based in Houston, TX. Mixed media on canvas, 54x36in. Certificate of authenticity included. Ships worldwide.
