Some falls become a way of moving forward.

The Man Who Refuses to Stay Down captures the fragile space between impact and recovery. Horse and rider surge ahead as a single force, their forms fractured by speed, resistance, and memory.

Layers of encaustic, oil, and ink preserve the evidence of struggle rather than hiding it. Scratches, blurred gestures, and heavy textures transform the surface into a record of endurance, where every mark suggests movement instead of defeat.

The work rejects the myth of the flawless hero. Strength here is quieter: not the absence of failure, but the willingness to rise carrying its weight.

There is no final victory in this painting. Only the decision to get back up, one more time.

Original work by Papayon — Latin American contemporary artist based in Houston, TX. Oil on canvas board, 28 × 48in. Certificate of authenticity included.

Artist's Note

The Man Who Refuses to Stay Down found its home in a way I hadn't experienced before.

After an exhibition, Dave invited me to bring a selection of works to his house. Rather than choosing from a gallery wall or a screen, we carried the paintings from room to room, seeing how each one changed with the light and the space around it.

This piece kept asking for another look.

We tried it in different parts of the house, even in the bedroom, letting the work settle naturally before making a decision. There wasn't a rush to choose. The process became less about buying a painting and more about discovering where it belonged.

Eventually, this was the one that stayed.

As an artist, moments like that are memorable. A painting leaves the studio, but for a little while, you get to watch it search for its next home.
