Stand Up captures the uneasy moment between hesitation and action. A solitary figure stands at the foot of a staircase, surrounded by fragments of memory, graffiti, and unfinished thoughts that compete for attention.

Rather than depicting a triumph, the work lingers in the uncertainty that comes before a choice is made. Layers of paint and intervention accumulate across the surface, preserving traces of earlier decisions while allowing new ones to emerge.

The staircase becomes both an invitation and a challenge. It suggests movement without promising where the climb will lead, while the surrounding imagery reminds us that progress rarely happens in silence or simplicity.

Created through a process of continual revision and layering, Stand Up embraces the idea that growth is seldom linear. The work leaves space for viewers to bring their own experiences to the image and decide what it means to take the next step.

Original work by Papayon — Latin American contemporary artist based in Houston, TX. Oil on canvas board, 27x25in. Certificate of authenticity included.

About This Work

Artist's Note

Some paintings ask for patience.

Stand Up was one of them.

By the time Albert encountered this work, we had already spoken about Aquina. Rather than choosing between them, he connected with both and made a decision that surprised me: he was willing to wait.

At the time, Stand Up was still part of a museum exhibition. Aquina had its own journey to complete as well. Instead of rushing the process, Albert let the works finish the lives they were living before bringing them together.

I've always believed that a painting doesn't begin or end in the studio. It gathers experiences through the places it visits and the people who spend time with it.

For me, Stand Up will always be connected to the idea that some collections aren't built in a single moment. They grow through patience, trust, and the understanding that certain things are worth waiting for.
