Pulled Away belongs to Rules of Engagement, an ongoing series that explores negotiation beyond boardrooms and battlefields. Here, the exchange is almost silent. One rider pulls his horse away while the other remains still, his lowered posture offering no clear victory or defeat.

The true tension lies in what refuses to move. Even as one figure chooses distance, the horse hesitates, suggesting that leaving is often more complicated than deciding to go. The work considers the invisible forces that continue shaping relationships long after words have ended.

Original work by Papayon — Latin American contemporary artist based in Houston, TX. Oil on canvas board, 28x52in. Certificate of authenticity included.

About This Work

Studio Record

Pulled Away emerged while expanding Rules of Engagement beyond explicit gestures of conflict and into quieter forms of negotiation. The composition was intentionally built around the horses' behavior rather than dramatic human action. The restrained posture of the riders, combined with the resistance of the black horse and the lowered head of the bay horse, creates the psychological tension that defines the work. The painting marks a shift in the series toward subtler, more observational narratives where body language carries as much meaning as any symbolic object.

Artist's Note

I wasn't interested in painting an argument. I was interested in painting the moment after it.

The rider on the left appears ready to leave, yet his horse resists the movement. The rider opposite doesn't pursue him, doesn't intervene, doesn't celebrate. Their silence says more than another exchange ever could.

In Rules of Engagement, negotiations are rarely about winning. They're about recognizing that every relationship reaches a point where one side begins to pull away while the other simply watches. Whether that distance becomes freedom or regret is left to the viewer.
