Started in 2022 and completed in 2024, this painting became a repository of questions, frustrations, symbols, and contradictions accumulated over time. Rather than following a predetermined composition, the work evolved through layers of addition, destruction, revision, and rediscovery.
A crowned crow, a wounded Pegasus, religious references, corporate icons, machinery, graffiti-like markings, and fragments of personal symbolism coexist within the same visual field. Together they form a contemporary mythology—one where faith, ambition, consumption, sacrifice, power, and identity intersect in uneasy ways.
For Papayon, the painting became less about documenting a moment and more about understanding it. Each layer records a different stage of that process, preserving traces of doubt, resistance, and transformation.
Completed only after two years of continuous evolution, the work stands as both artifact and witness: a reflection on the stories we inherit, the systems we participate in, and the symbols that continue to shape how we see ourselves and the world around us.
Original work by Papayon — Latin American contemporary artist based in Houston, TX. Mixed media encaustic on canvas, 29.5x25.5in. Certificate of authenticity included. Ships worldwide.
