Some people stay. Some leave. You keep riding.

Cowboy Up reflects on the people who shape a life and the quiet resilience required to keep moving forward.

Across the lower half of the composition, ghostlike red figures drift through the landscape. They suggest the relationships that define us—family, friendship, love, work, ambition, and the countless encounters that leave their mark whether they remain or fade away.

At the center, horse and rider rise together beneath the command: COWBOY UP. The phrase is less about toughness than persistence. It acknowledges that life is built from chapters, each carrying its own victories and losses, yet none of them can become the final destination.

The work proposes that resilience is not forgetting the people and moments that shaped us. It is carrying them forward while finding the strength to continue the ride.

Original work by Papayon — Latin American contemporary artist based in Houston, TX. Oil on canvas board, 28×47in. Certificate of authenticity included.

About This Work

Encounters

Inspired by conversations about the difference between strength and the willingness to continue.

Artist's Note

Cowboy Up found its home during one of my favorite ways of sharing art.

After an exhibition, Dave invited me to bring a group of paintings to his house. Rather than choosing from photographs, we lived with the works for a while, moving them through different rooms and letting the spaces decide what belonged where.

This painting stood out because it carried many stories at once. The figures scattered across the landscape reminded me that a life is never built by one person or one moment alone, but by the people we meet along the way.

Eventually, Cowboy Up stayed.

Looking back, I like the symmetry of it. A painting about the people who accompany us through life found its place through friendship, conversation, and the simple act of sharing a home with art before making a decision.
